Standard Chartered

Standard Chartered stands out because it is a bank built for international business rather than for a domestic British high street. By our assessment, its real strength is trade finance, foreign exchange and corporate banking across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, where it has long been known as a cross-border specialist. That focus gives it a clear identity, but it also means it is not the neatest choice for someone who just wants a simple local current account. In practice the name carries a fairly institutional feel: documents, relationships, treasury work and the kind of services companies use when money moves across borders. Against universal retail banks it is narrower, but that narrowness is exactly why it matters. People with trade, international payroll or multi-market operations will understand the appeal quickly; ordinary personal banking users may only meet the edges of it. By our assessment, Standard Chartered is strongest where geography becomes part of the banking problem, and the country code points to the United Kingdom.
