Spotify

Spotify is the on-demand music service people use for playlists, albums, podcasts, and algorithmic discovery, and by our assessment, its real strength is how well it mixes personal listening with background listening. It is for listeners who want a huge catalogue on a phone, smart speaker, or desktop without managing files. The drawback is familiar to anyone in streaming music: the free tier is limited, the app can feel crowded with podcasts and recommendations, and ownership is replaced by access. In practice Spotify is less like a music collection and more like a living queue that keeps learning what to serve next. Against Apple Music and YouTube Music, it still has the clearest identity around playlists and discovery. Spotify is strongest when someone wants a service that keeps picking up where the last song left off, and the app never lets the queue sit still.
