Singapore General Hospital

Singapore General Hospital sits at the centre of Singapore’s public hospital system, and it is the kind of place people think of for serious, all-round inpatient care rather than a narrow speciality. By our assessment, its strength is breadth: emergency work, complex medicine, surgery, and long follow-up under one roof. The trade-off is the usual one for a major referral hospital: it is busy, formal, and not built for a quick, personal feel. In practice that means layers of departments, many handoffs, and a place that works best when the case really needs a big hospital behind it. It stands above smaller general hospitals and below the fantasy of one-stop simplicity; the machinery is real, and so is the waiting for it.
