By our assessment, hospice does its best work when the goal has changed from fighting the disease to making the remaining time calmer and more humane. Its strength is practical and specific: pain relief, nursing attention, and social or emotional support are bundled around one clear aim. The limit is just as clear, because hospice is not there to chase aggressive treatment or keep promising recovery. In daily use the work is quiet, careful, and full of coordination between staff and relatives. It sits alongside other hospice providers rather than above them, and its value comes from this kind of care being specialized in a way ordinary hospital wards usually are not.
