Princeton University

Princeton University is the sort of university people reach for when they want a small, highly selective campus with a heavy academic center of gravity. By our assessment, it is especially strong in close undergraduate teaching, strong departments across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, and the residential college setup that gives it a more contained feel than a huge public campus. The trade-off is obvious: the place is built around intense selectivity and an elite academic pace, so it is not a casual or broad-access option. In practice that usually means quiet, polished, and demanding, with a lot of attention on seminars, advising, and research culture. Against other top private universities, Princeton sits near the very top for people who want scale kept tight and academic prestige made very visible. It is better for students who want depth and structure than for anyone looking for a large, loose, vocational atmosphere.
