Petrobras

Petrobras is the big Brazilian state-linked oil and gas company, and that already tells you most of what matters. By our assessment, it is strongest in upstream production, refining and the whole heavy machinery of getting fuel out of the ground and into the market. The trade-off is obvious: this is a capital-hungry, politically exposed business, not a nimble consumer brand. In practice it feels like a company shaped by scale, regulation and commodity swings rather than by glossy presentation. Against private oil majors, Petrobras is less free to move and more tied to Brazil's domestic energy needs. It makes sense for readers who want exposure to a national oil champion, and much less sense for anyone looking for a clean, low-drama business.
