The downside is the usual one for this part of the market: the experience is tied to a newer networked ecosystem, and the brand has to keep proving itself against bigger, better-funded rivals. In practice NIO feels less old-school carmaker and more tech company with wheels, which some people will like and others will not. Compared with BYD or Tesla, it has a narrower premium identity and less mass-market reach. NIO is based in China, and that is exactly where its electric-car strategy makes sense.
