Microsoft is still the company of Windows, Office, Xbox, and Azure, and by our assessment, that mix of office software, cloud, and gaming keeps it unusually durable. It is the obvious name for workplaces that live in Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook, and for companies that need Azure rather than a consumer app. The downside is legacy weight: Windows and Office have deep roots, which means familiar interfaces, old habits, and plenty of admin baggage. In use it often feels invisible when it is working well, which is exactly what a lot of organisations want from infrastructure. Against peers, Microsoft sits between the old desktop era and the cloud era better than most, because it never fully left either one. Microsoft is strongest where boring reliability matters more than flash, and that is still a large part of modern computing.
