Merchants Bancorp has the plain, institutional feel of a bank parent that probably lives in lending, deposits, and a regional footprint rather than in consumer flair. By our assessment, it is good at sounding like a serious financial umbrella without making claims it cannot easily back up from the name alone. The upside of that restraint is stability and recognizability inside its own category; the downside is that it blends into a crowded field of similar bancorp names.
