Katibat Ansar al Charia

Katibat Ansar al Charia is the sort of name used by an armed Islamist formation rather than by any civilian association, and that is the most concrete thing to say about it. By our assessment, its identity is defined by militancy and local conflict politics, which puts it in the same rough category as other armed groups in the region. The downside is the same one that follows this kind of entity everywhere: it is about confrontation, not normal public life, and it carries the instability that comes with that role. In practice, a group like this is understood through reports of presence, alignment, and armed activity, not through ordinary services or products. It belongs among militant factions, and that is a very different place from the world of legitimate civic organizations.
