GitHub

GitHub is where software teams keep code, track issues and review changes, so the people who really use it are developers, open-source contributors and engineering teams. By our assessment, its strongest trick is the pull request workflow: branching, code review, comments and merge history all live in one place and make collaboration unusually visible. The trade-off is that GitHub can feel like a noisy layer when a project is tiny, because the platform adds process, permissions and notifications that a solo coder may not need. In practice, it is a mix of repository pages, issue trackers, README files and automation through Actions, which makes the whole thing feel less like storage and more like a working bench for code. It sits at the centre of modern public code hosting, ahead of plain file sharing and older repository tools in everyday mindshare. GitHub is for people who want shared code to be discussed, reviewed and shipped in public or in teams, not for anyone who only needs a private folder of files.
