Fiserv

Fiserv does the unglamorous work that makes card payments, merchant processing and bank systems run in the background, which is exactly why banks and retailers keep dealing with it. By our assessment, its real strength is that it sits in the plumbing of payments and core banking, where reliability matters more than style and where a company like this can quietly hold together a lot of moving parts. The downside is that this kind of software and services business is invisible by design: ordinary users rarely see Fiserv directly, and what it offers is spread across banks, terminals and back-end systems. In practice it is all workflows, settlement, processing and integration rather than a single consumer app. It belongs with the big payments and financial-technology infrastructure names, not with the front-facing apps people talk about over coffee.
