Devon Energy

Devon Energy lives in the oil-and-gas world of drilling, production, and commodity prices, so its fortunes move with the energy market rather than with consumer taste. By our assessment, its strength is that it is a focused upstream producer, not a sprawling conglomerate, which makes the business easy to read if you already know the sector. The obvious downside is exposure to the cycle: when prices move, the picture changes fast, and that is simply built into the kind of company it is. In practice this is a balance-sheet-and-reserves story, not a retail story, and the share price tends to reflect that hard, industrial exposure. Devon Energy sits among the American independents that do oil and gas rather than refining or utilities. It suits people who want energy-sector exposure and can live with volatility, and it is a poor fit for anyone wanting stability. The Astrina catalogue records it under the United States.
