Cochlear

Cochlear is for people who live with severe hearing loss and need implantable hearing technology rather than ordinary hearing aids. By our assessment, its clearest strength is that it helped define the modern cochlear implant category, with systems that can give access to sound when hearing aids are not enough. The trade-off is obvious: this is surgery, follow-up care and device management, so it is not a casual consumer product. In practice the name means electrodes, processors, programming visits and a long adjustment period, not a simple pair of earbuds with a fancy label. Against hearing-aid makers, Cochlear sits in the more specialised and more demanding end of the field. The ceiling is set by how much hearing can be restored and how much effort the user can take on after implantation.
