Citigroup

Citigroup is the global banking group people think of for credit cards, consumer banking, investment banking, and cross-border financial services. By our assessment, it is strongest when scale matters: it can move across countries and lines of business in a way smaller banks cannot. The downside is that this breadth also makes it harder to read and less intimate than a local bank with a single clear focus. In practice Citigroup feels like a sprawling financial machine, not a friendly neighborhood branch. It sits among the big universal banks, where complexity is part of the package and where regulators, markets, and risk controls matter constantly. The US origin in its record matches that role, because this is one of the classic names in American finance.
