COMMONWEALTH BANK OF AUSTRALIA is one of the big Australian retail banks, so it matters most to people who want day-to-day banking, home loans, cards and digital access in one place. By our assessment, its strength is the full-service package: branches, ATMs, online banking and a very familiar app-based routine. The trade-off is the usual one for a major bank, with fees, credit checks and a fairly formal way of doing things that can feel heavy next to a neobank. In practice it is the kind of bank where you move money, pay bills and manage a mortgage without having to think about the institution much. It sits above smaller online-only challengers on breadth, but below the best digital-first banks on lightness.
