CNOOC is the offshore oil and gas producer to think of when the conversation turns to Chinese energy projects, drilling, and upstream production. By our assessment, it is good at the technical, capital-heavy side of the sector: finding, developing, and producing hydrocarbons at sea and on large industrial terms. The downside is built into the business model, which is exposed to commodity swings, regulation, and the long lead times that come with major energy projects. In practice it is an upstream operator with serious scale, not a company people use in any everyday sense. The Astrina catalogue records China for it.
