CATL

CATL is the battery maker that sits at the center of the electric-vehicle supply chain, and that is what makes it important far beyond the label on the pack. By our assessment, it is strongest at large-scale lithium-ion battery production and at the engineering discipline that keeps EV packs dependable. The downside is the usual one for a giant industrial supplier: the products are mostly invisible to consumers, and the business lives on manufacturing scale, materials, and customer contracts. In practice it means cells, modules, factories, and long technical relationships rather than anything glamorous. Compared with smaller battery firms, CATL has the advantage of size and reach; compared with a car brand, it is several steps behind the showroom. It matters most to automakers and energy-storage builders, not to someone shopping for a phone accessory. The catalogue marks it as from China, and that fits its role as a heavyweight in advanced manufacturing.
