Berkshire Hathaway

Berkshire Hathaway is the plain, giant holding company style of American capitalism, and by our assessment, it is for people who want a portfolio of businesses rather than a single logo. Its real strength is the mix: insurance, rail, utilities, manufacturing, retail and major stock holdings sit under one umbrella, which makes it unusually diversified for a public company. The downside is that it is hard to read at a glance, because the whole point is a sprawl of operating companies and investments rather than one clean product. In practice Berkshire Hathaway feels less like a consumer brand and more like a machine for owning and compounding cash across many industries. Compared with an ordinary conglomerate, it has a stronger reputation for disciplined capital allocation and a very low-key public face. It suits investors who are comfortable with complexity and long time horizons, and it is not meant for anyone looking for a simple one-business story.
