Barrick Gold

Barrick Gold is a large gold mining company, so its appeal is mostly to people who want direct exposure to gold rather than a general mining basket. By our assessment, it is strongest when gold itself is in focus: the business is simple to understand, tied to a real commodity, and easier to read than a sprawling diversified miner. The trade-off is obvious: earnings can swing with the metal price, and mining always brings heavy operating and political risk around the world. In practice that means a stock that moves with the gold cycle and asks for patience, not a sleepy utility. It sits near the top of the pure-gold camp, with less clutter than diversified miners and less steadiness than businesses with recurring revenue. Barrick Gold will suit investors who want that commodity exposure, but it is not for anyone looking for smooth, predictable results. It is listed in Canada.
