BHP Billiton

BHP Billiton is the older full name people associate with the big diversified miner, and the name still signals the same heavy business: iron ore, copper, coal, and large-scale extraction. By our assessment, it carries the strengths of a major resource house — scale, asset depth, and exposure to global commodity demand — but also the same hard limits: capital intensity, regulatory pressure, and earnings that move with price cycles. In practice, BHP Billiton feels like a legacy corporate name attached to mines, ports, and long supply chains. Compared with smaller mining groups, it has more breadth and more weight; compared with cleaner industrial stocks, it is much rougher and more cyclical. BHP Billiton is from Australia, and the name fits a company that has always been about bulk materials rather than elegance.
