Australian National University

Australian National University is a research university for students who want a strong academic core and a national-level reputation. By our assessment, it is especially solid in the humanities, social sciences, and policy-heavy fields, and the Canberra setting fits that public, government-facing feel. The main downside is the same one many research-heavy universities have: the experience can feel formal and theoretical, with less of a cosy campus mood than some smaller places. In practice it means serious seminars, a lot of independent work, and an institution that expects students to keep up. It sits near the top end of Australian higher education, with less of the mass-market feel of larger universities. Australian National University is better for people who want an intellectually serious place than for those looking for an easy or decorative one.
