Applied Materials

Applied Materials is the equipment maker that sits behind modern chip production, supplying the tools used to deposit, etch, and inspect semiconductor wafers. By our assessment, that is its real strength: it sells the expensive, specialized machinery that fabs cannot do without, so its work is tied to the whole chip supply chain rather than to consumer gadgets. The downside is obvious too: this is a capital-intense business, closely tied to investment cycles in semiconductors, and it is not the sort of company that makes sense outside manufacturing. In practice, Applied Materials is about precision, clean-room process, and constant engineering rather than a flashy finished product. It stands among the major names in semiconductor equipment, and the name matters most to people who already live in chip production, not to casual buyers.
