American Express

American Express is the premium card name people know for charge cards, travel perks, and merchant acceptance that is still not as universal as Visa or Mastercard. By our assessment, its real strength is the card experience itself: rewards, service, and a brand that has long sat at the higher end of consumer finance. The trade-off is built in, because a card network and issuer with a more selective profile does not feel as universally accepted or as everyday as the broadest payment rails. In practice it is a card for spending, booking, and collecting points, with a polished account experience around it. It stands apart from plain banks and from the huge open card networks by being both issuer and premium brand at once. The Astrina catalogue marks it as US, which matches the American base of the company.
