Titanic

Titanic stands out because it is both a disaster film and a very direct romantic melodrama, and that combination gives it unusual reach. By our assessment, it is strongest when it balances spectacle with patient emotion: the ship, the class divide, and the doomed romance all carry real weight. The obvious downside is length, and the film asks for some patience before it settles into its full emotional current. In practice it feels big, earnest, and carefully paced, with set pieces that are there to serve feeling rather than replace it. Compared with other disaster movies, it puts more emphasis on character feeling and cleaner melodrama. It works best for viewers who want scale joined to romance, and it is less convincing for anyone who wants the whole thing stripped down to pure action.
