The Terminator

The Terminator still works as lean action cinema: a chase machine built from clean setups, simple goals, and very little slack. By our assessment, it is strongest when it keeps moving, using pursuer-and-target tension instead of long explanation. The downside is also part of the design; the characters are built to serve the hunt, not to open up into much beyond it. In practice that gives the film a hard, clipped pace and a lot of direct spectacle, with almost no room for softness. Compared with bigger modern action films, it is smaller in scale but firmer in shape. The Terminator is for viewers who want the genre stripped down to pursuit, motion, and danger, and not for anyone looking for emotional breadth.
