The Mist is a horror film that leans on confinement, uncertainty, and the dread of not knowing what is outside the next doorway. By our assessment, its real strength is the atmosphere of pressure: fear comes as much from people trapped together as from whatever is in the fog. That also marks the main limit, because the film’s power depends on sustained tension and a bleak mood rather than on constant variety. In practice it feels tense and closed-in, with scenes that keep narrowing the room around the viewer. Compared with cleaner monster horror, it is more interested in panic, suspicion, and moral strain than in neat scares. The Mist suits viewers who want horror to feel oppressive and human, not just noisy. Its 2007 release puts it in that period of mainstream horror that still trusted mood over spectacle.
