The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight stands out because it treats a comic-book film like a tense urban crime thriller, with Batman pulled into a citywide struggle rather than a simple hero-villain scheme. By our assessment, that is where it is genuinely strongest: the pressure-cooker pacing, the hard surfaces of the action, and the way Gotham feels like a working crime city instead of a fantasy backdrop. It is also one of those films that stays legible in motion, which matters when the set pieces keep getting bigger. The downside is not subtle but real: the grimness can be relentless, and the moral weight leaves little room for lightness. In practice, The Dark Knight plays best when you want a serious, tightly controlled blockbuster rather than a playful superhero ride. It sits near the top of its category because it helped define what a crime-leaning superhero film could be. The 2008 date and Crime label fit that reputation cleanly.
