The Conjuring leans on classic haunted-house horror, where the chief job is to build dread with rooms, hallways, and things that move when they should not. By our assessment, it is strong at staging fear through timing and restraint rather than constant noise; that is why the scares land for many viewers. The cost is familiar to the genre: once you know the rhythm, some of the moves are visible before they arrive. In practice it feels like a careful escalation, with the camera lingering on ordinary spaces until they stop feeling ordinary. Against newer horror that chases irony or gore, it is more straight-faced and cleaner in its scares. It is best for viewers who want an old-school fright machine and not a joke-laced horror pastiche.
