The Boxtrolls

The Boxtrolls is an adventure film built for viewers who like handmade stop-motion detail and a slightly off-kilter fantasy world. By our assessment, its real strength is the craft: the textures, the movement, and the busy miniature look give it a lot of life. That same handmade quality also keeps it from feeling smooth in the modern digital sense, and the tone can be oddly shaggy rather than slick. In practice it feels busy, tactile, and full of odd little corners to look at, which is part of the pleasure. Against other family adventures, The Boxtrolls leans more into eccentric design than into broad polish, and that makes it memorable. It suits people who enjoy animation with visible labor in it, and it will feel less satisfying if they want something clean and fast.
