The Aviator

The Aviator is a long, polished biographical film about ambition, control, and the cost of building a life around work and flight. By our assessment, it is strongest when it stays on the pressure of being larger than the room around you, with the period detail doing a lot of quiet work. The trade-off is length and a certain distance, because the film is more interested in scale and obsession than in warmth. In practice it feels measured and deliberate, with scenes that are built to show momentum and exhaustion rather than easy sentiment. Compared with sharper, leaner biographies, it leans more toward spectacle and process than toward intimacy. The Aviator will suit viewers who like studio biography with size and finish, and it will be less appealing if a lighter, faster portrait is what they want. It remains most memorable as a serious prestige film that treats success as something expensive.
