Spotlight

Spotlight is a newsroom film for people who like process, documents, and the slow pressure of following a story until it cannot be ignored. By our assessment, its strength is the disciplined, workmanlike way it shows reporting as repeated calls, patient checking, and little breakthroughs rather than dramatic speeches. That also sets its limit: if someone wants big swings or emotional showboating, this will feel deliberately restrained. In practice it is tense because it is careful, and the carefulness is what gives the film its weight. Compared with more sensational dramas about institutions, Spotlight is quieter and more exact, which suits its subject. The 2015 Biography label fits the sober style, and the movie keeps its focus on the machinery of journalism rather than on noise.
