Rope

Rope is the sort of thriller that asks for patience and pays it back with formal tension, because the long-take illusion turns a small room into a pressure cooker. By our assessment, its real strength is the discipline of the staging: movement, timing, and the way the camera has to keep finding new angles inside a constrained space. The limit is also built into the idea; the film is less about variety than about control, and if that control does not appeal, the whole exercise can feel severe. In practice it has the feeling of a live piece that has been locked into a movie, with the tension coming from what can be held in frame and what cannot. Compared with ordinary crime films, Rope is more of a formal stunt than a plot-forward genre piece, and that is exactly why it has lasted. It is a good choice for viewers who like Hitchcock at his most schematic and precise; the apartment setting does not let the film breathe much.
