Orphan leans hard on the uneasy pleasure of a polished psychological horror story: it is built for viewers who like dread to arrive through behavior, not just noise. By our assessment, it works best as a nasty, controlled escalation rather than a shock machine, and that gives it a sharper edge than a lot of routine haunted-or-killer material. The downside is that once you know the central trick, part of the tension becomes mechanical, and some of the late-stage twists are more blunt than subtle. In practice it plays like a glossy studio horror film with strong momentum and a mean streak, moving from social unease into full genre ugliness. It sits above disposable scare fare and below the really great pressure-cooker horrors because its premise does a lot of the work. Orphan is for people who want a clean, creepy setup and do not mind some broadness in the payoff.
