Monterey Pop

Monterey Pop is one of the cleanest ways to see what a concert documentary can do when it trusts performance more than commentary. By our assessment, its strength is the directness of filmed music: the camera keeps close to the stage, the crowd is part of the event, and the whole thing feels present rather than explained. The limit is the same one most music documentaries share — if the performances themselves do not matter to someone, there is not much story machinery to hide behind. In practice it plays like a series of live moments linked by atmosphere instead of plot. Compared with ordinary backstage documentaries, it is less about narration and more about simply being there.
