Modern Times makes the factory line itself feel like the joke, and that gives the comedy a shape that still reads clearly. By our assessment, it is a classic of silent-era screen comedy, built around physical performance, timing, and visual business instead of dialogue. Its great strength is precision: every gesture lands, and the mechanical routine of work becomes both funny and anxious to watch. The trade-off is that its style depends on patient viewing and on accepting a very different rhythm from modern talk-heavy comedy. In practice it feels lean, direct, and surprisingly sharp, with images doing the work that later films would hand to dialogue. Against other comedies, especially noisy ones, it is smaller in volume but far more exact in how it lands a gag. Modern Times still looks modern because it understands machines, repetition, and human awkwardness so cleanly.
