Loving Vincent

Loving Vincent stands out because it turns painting itself into the point of the film, and that makes it more unusual than a standard animated biographical drama. By our assessment, the painted frames are the main attraction: the surface keeps shifting, and the whole thing feels handmade in a way most animation does not. The trade-off is that the style can keep attention on the image more than on narrative flow, so the film asks for patience. In practice it is less like a smooth biopic and more like walking through a gallery where every shot has to earn its place. Against ordinary animation, it is much more labor-heavy in feel and far more interested in texture than speed. Loving Vincent is for viewers who want an art-forward film and do not mind that the style sometimes outruns the story.
