Kaili Blues

Kaili Blues asks for attention, and it pays that attention back with one of the strangest, most absorbing forms of contemporary drama. By our assessment, its strength is the way it lets time feel loose while still keeping the viewer oriented through space, memory, and movement; that is a rare combination. The trade-off is that this kind of cinema does not hand over plot in neat pieces, so anyone wanting a straight line and clear payoff may find it frustrating. In practice it feels like drifting through a place where scenes connect by mood, sound, and passing detail rather than by blunt explanation. Compared with more conventional dramas, it is less interested in tidy structure and more interested in how a landscape and a mind can echo each other, which is exactly why it stands out.
