Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre asks for a viewer who likes literary drama with weather in the walls: restrained emotion, old houses, and long stretches of moral pressure. By our assessment, its strength is the steady seriousness it gives Charlotte Brontë’s story, which suits this material better than flashy reinvention would. The trade-off is that it can feel severe and emotionally contained, because the film is working with austerity rather than sparkle. In practice it is a handsomely composed period drama, all formal rooms, dark corridors, and people speaking under tension. Its place is clear enough: one of the many screen versions of a much-adapted novel, and not the sort that tries to be louder than the book. That means it is strongest for viewers who want atmosphere, repression, and romantic intensity held in check. People looking for breezy costume comfort will find it colder than that, but the controlled tone is exactly what gives Jane Eyre its weight.
