Hitchcock

Hitchcock is a biography built around a very specific kind of Hollywood story: a famous director at work, with the private strain and public image both in view. By our assessment, its main strength is that it turns a behind-the-scenes subject into something readable without flattening the man into a museum label. The trade-off is a familiar one for biographies, since the film can only go so far before it starts sounding like an overview rather than a surprise. In practice it has the polished, talkative feel of a studio biopic, with a lot of attention on process and personality. Compared with broader films about filmmaking, Hitchcock stays more focused and more closed in on one figure. It is for viewers who like biography with some cinema-history texture, and the title signals exactly how tightly it keeps to that subject.
