Halloween

Halloween turned the slasher into a clean, low-budget shape that still governs the genre: a masked killer, a suburban night, and danger that comes from ordinary spaces. By our assessment, its power lies in restraint, because it uses simple composition, patient stalking, and spare music instead of constant bloodshed. The downside is familiar to anyone who meets older horror on its own terms: the suspense depends on slow build and a willingness to sit with tension. In practice it feels taut and direct, with the camera treating streets and doorways like places to be watched rather than admired. Halloween sits near the root of modern horror, not as a noisy monster movie but as a model for stalking suspense. The catalogue marks it as Horror, and that is exactly what it still is.
