Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day keeps squeezing new comedy out of the same morning, which is exactly why it still works. By our assessment, its best trick is repetition that never feels lazy: the setup lets small changes in behavior become the real joke, and then the emotional turn lands because the pattern has been so carefully built. The downside is that the premise is so specific that the film can seem simple from a distance, even though it is doing a lot with timing and structure. In practice it plays like a precise comic machine with a human center. Compared with broad studio comedies, Groundhog Day is smarter and less noisy. It rewards attention to detail, and the 1993 comedy label barely contains how neatly it balances wit and feeling.
