GoodFellas

GoodFellas follows the rise-and-fall gangster model, but it is really at its best as a portrait of criminal life getting faster, tighter, and uglier as success piles up. By our assessment, it is one of the sharper biography films because it keeps the talk, the pressure, and the social detail moving instead of turning everything into solemn legend. The downside is that its tempo and voice can make the whole world feel sealed off, with little room for distance or comfort. In practice it plays like a long, busy stretch of scenes where conversation, status, and fear keep changing hands. Compared with cleaner mob dramas, GoodFellas is messier and more immediate, less interested in polish than in momentum.
