Double Suicide

Double Suicide demands patience, because its power comes from sustained emotion rather than easy movement, and by our assessment, that is exactly why it matters. It is a drama for viewers drawn to tragic intensity, formal restraint, and stories that lean hard on feeling. The film’s great strength is the way it holds grief and desire in the same frame without softening either one. The downside is that this kind of drama can be intense to sit with, and it does not try to make itself comfortable. In practice it feels concentrated and severe, the sort of film that asks for full attention and gives little room to drift. Against more conventional dramas, it is more austere and more exacting, but also more memorable for it. Double Suicide is one of those films where the form itself tightens the mood, and the final effect is hard to shake.
