Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane is still the template for how a prestige drama can use structure, lighting, and memory to build a larger portrait than its plot alone suggests. By our assessment, its strength is the control of form: deep focus, bold angles, and the way every scene seems to push toward the question of how a life gets remembered. The drawback is not weakness so much as distance, because its careful construction can feel formal before it feels intimate. As a 1941 drama, it sits near the center of film history rather than at the edge of it. People come to it for the craft and the shape of its storytelling, and it still rewards that attention.
