Catfish

Catfish works because it treats online identity as something fragile and easy to misread, and that makes it more than a simple documentary premise. By our assessment, it is for viewers who want a true-story documentary with a social-media-era edge, one that pays attention to how people present themselves through screens and messages. Its strongest point is the tension between intimacy and uncertainty: the film keeps showing how quickly a connection can feel personal while still being unstable. The drawback is that the later documentary landscape borrowed so much from this kind of setup that the film can now feel familiar in outline. In practice it has the look of a small, tightly focused documentary rather than a sprawling investigative work. Compared with broader documentaries, it is narrower and more pointed, which is part of why it stuck. The title Catfish became a term people still use for deceptive online personas, and that public afterlife says a lot about its reach.
