Carry on Dick

Carry on Dick belongs to the Carry On style of British farce, where the point is quick innuendo, broad behavior, and a period setting used for jokes. By our assessment, that makes it good at speed and cheek, but it also means the humor is very much of its era and can feel blunt now. The adventure label matters less than the Carry On machinery underneath it: the film is built around gags, not suspense or scale. In practice it tends to move like a joke train with very little interest in realism. Against the bigger adventure tradition, it is tiny and deliberately silly, and that is the whole bargain. It works best if the Carry On rhythm is already your thing.
