Bullitt

Bullitt is one of the cleanest examples of a car-chase action film, and that precision is still what people remember about it. By our assessment, its strength is the hard, stripped-down style: the movie keeps its cool, lets the movement speak, and refuses to over-explain itself. The trade-off is that it is built less for busy plotting than for mood, patrol work, and the patient buildup of tension. In practice it feels lean, controlled, and very physical, with San Francisco streets doing as much work as the dialogue. Compared with later action movies that load on spectacle, Bullitt stays economical and serious. The 1968 action tag makes sense, because this is the kind of film that helped define what screen pursuit could look like.
