Blue Giant

Blue Giant asks for attention, because it is built around music itself rather than around a simple sports-style rise and fall. By our assessment, that focus is its biggest strength: the film can use animation to make sound, energy, and performance feel immediate, which is exactly what a jazz story needs. The downside is structural, not fatal: a music-driven anime can feel intense if the viewer does not care about the playing, the practice, or the pressure of getting better. In practice it should feel alive, detailed, and loud in the best sense, with movement doing some of the storytelling that dialogue would normally carry. Compared with standard dramas, it has the extra freedom animation gives to rhythm and visual emphasis. The Astrina catalogue places Blue Giant in 2023 and under Animation, and that matches the kind of film it is. It is for people who want the performance to be the point, not just background.
