Big Fish asks for patience, because it treats tall tales as a serious way of telling family history. By our assessment, its strongest quality is the way it lets wonder and sentiment sit together without reducing either one to a joke. The downside is that the film leans so far into fable that some viewers will want firmer ground under it. In practice it feels like a series of remembered stories, with the mood shifting between playful and mournful instead of chasing strict realism. Big Fish sits closer to poetic fantasy than to ordinary adventure, and that is what makes it stand apart. It works best for people who like emotional storytelling with a soft edge and less well for anyone who wants everything nailed down literally, scene by scene.
